How to Type Text in a PDF for Free (No Adobe Required)
Published March 24, 2026
Need to fill out a PDF form, add your name to a contract, or insert text into a PDF document? You don't need to pay for Adobe Acrobat. There are multiple free ways to type text into PDFs — right in your browser, on your phone, or on your desktop.
Method 1: Use a Free Online PDF Editor (Browser)
The fastest option is a browser-based PDF editor. Tools like PeacefulPDF, Smallpdf, or ILovePDF let you upload a PDF, click to place a text box, type your text, and download the edited PDF — all for free, with no account required.
Steps:
- Open PeacefulPDF or similar tool in your browser
- Upload your PDF
- Select the text/edit tool
- Click where you want to add text and start typing
- Adjust font size and position as needed
- Download the finished PDF
This works on any device — Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android — because it runs entirely in the browser. No download or installation needed.
Method 2: Microsoft Edge (Built-In, Free)
If you're on Windows, Microsoft Edge has a built-in PDF editor that lets you add text annotations and drawings. Open your PDF in Edge, then click the Add notes button (pencil icon) in the toolbar. Select Text and click anywhere on the PDF to type.
Save with Ctrl+S to save the annotated version. This is free, fast, and requires nothing extra if you're on Windows 10 or 11.
Method 3: Adobe Acrobat Reader (Free Version)
Adobe Acrobat Reader is free to download and lets you fill in PDF forms and add text comments. Open your PDF, then go to Tools > Fill & Sign. Click the text field tool and click where you want to type.
Note: The free version of Acrobat Reader only lets you fill forms and add annotations — to directly edit existing PDF text, you need the paid Acrobat Pro. For adding new text boxes to any PDF (not just forms), the browser-based methods above are more capable.
Method 4: Preview on Mac (Free, Built-In)
Mac users have a great free option built right in: Preview. Open your PDF in Preview, go to Tools > Annotate > Text. Click anywhere to place a text box and type. You can change the font, size, and color from the markup toolbar.
Save with Command+S. Preview is surprisingly capable for basic PDF text additions and form filling.
Method 5: Fill PDF Forms on iPhone/Android
If your PDF has interactive form fields (text boxes are built into the document), you can fill them directly in most PDF apps:
- iPhone: Open in Files app or Books, tap a form field, and type
- Android: Adobe Acrobat app (free) handles form filling well
- Both: Browser-based tools work on mobile too — just open in Chrome or Safari
What About Editing Existing Text?
Adding new text boxes and editing existing PDF text are different things. Most free tools let you add new text anywhere on a PDF. But changing existing text that's already in the PDF requires either converting it to a Word document first (via Google Docs — see our guide) or using a paid tool like Adobe Acrobat Pro.
For forms, contracts, and documents where you just need to fill in blank fields or add your signature, the free methods above work perfectly.
Tips for Clean Results
- Match the font style and size of the existing document for a seamless look
- Use black text on white forms for legibility
- Zoom in before placing text boxes to get precise positioning
- After editing, compress the PDF if the file size increased significantly
