How to Rotate Specific Pages in a PDF (Free Methods)

Learn how to rotate individual pages in a PDF without rotating the entire document. Free methods for Windows, Mac, and online tools.

By PeacefulPDF Team

Not every page in your PDF needs to be rotated. Maybe one landscape table is sideways while the rest of the document is portrait. Maybe a scanned page went in at the wrong angle. Rotating specific pages — not the whole document — is a common need, and it is easier than you might think.

Method 1: Mac Preview (Built-In)

Mac users can rotate individual pages right in Preview:

  1. Open your PDF in Preview.
  2. Show thumbnails: View > Thumbnails (Option+Cmd+2).
  3. Select the page you want to rotate in the sidebar.
  4. Press Cmd+L to rotate left or Cmd+R to rotate right.
  5. Or click the rotate button in the toolbar (curved arrow icon).
  6. Only the selected page rotates — everything else stays in place.
  7. Go to File > Export as PDF to save the rotated version.

To rotate multiple specific pages, hold Cmd and click each page in the thumbnail sidebar, then press the rotate shortcut. All selected pages rotate together.

Method 2: Free Online Tools

iLovePDF Rotate

  1. Go to ilovepdf.com/rotate-pdf.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. You see all pages as thumbnails.
  4. Click on any page, then click the rotate button (90, 180, or 270 degrees).
  5. Rotate as many individual pages as you need.
  6. Click Rotate PDF and download.

PDF24 Rotate

  1. Go to tools.pdf24.org/en/rotate-pdf-pages.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Click on each page to set its rotation angle.
  4. Click Apply changes and download.

Both tools let you rotate individual pages to different angles in the same session — page 1 at 90 degrees, page 3 at 180, etc.

Method 3: PDFsam Basic (Desktop)

PDFsam Basic is a free, open-source desktop tool for Windows, Mac, and Linux:

  1. Download from pdfsam.org.
  2. Open PDFsam and select the Rotate module.
  3. Drag and drop your PDF into the window.
  4. Set the rotation angle (90, 180, or 270 degrees).
  5. Choose which pages to rotate (e.g., "1, 3, 5-8").
  6. Set the output location.
  7. Click Run.

The page range option is what makes PDFsam useful here — you can specify exactly which pages get rotated using standard page number notation.

Method 4: Adobe Acrobat Reader (Limited)

The free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader can rotate pages for viewing, but it does not save the rotation in the free tier. If you need permanent rotation, use one of the methods above.

If you happen to have Adobe Acrobat Pro (paid), page rotation is straightforward: View > Tools > Organize Pages, select pages, click Rotate.

Common Rotation Problems

Pages Keep Reverting to Wrong Orientation

Some PDF viewers rotate pages only for display without saving the change. Always use "Export as PDF" or a dedicated rotation tool to make the rotation permanent in the file itself.

Scanned Pages Are Slightly Crooked

If pages are not exactly 90 degrees off, rotation will not fix them. You need a deskew tool instead. Look for "deskew PDF" or "straighten PDF" tools online — PDF24 has a good one.

Every Other Page Is Sideways

This happens when scanning double-sided documents with a single-sided scanner. Use a tool that can rotate odd or even pages only. PDFsam and Sejda both support this.

Rotating Pages vs Rotating the View

ActionWhat HappensPersistent?
Rotate view in readerChanges display on your screen onlyNo — resets when you reopen
Rotate pages in toolChanges the actual page dataYes — saved in the file

If you want the rotation to stick, always use a tool that modifies the PDF file itself, not just the viewer display.

The Bottom Line

Mac users have it easiest with Preview. Everyone else should use iLovePDF or PDF24 for quick online fixes, or PDFsam for regular desktop use. The key is using a tool that permanently saves the rotation — not just rotating the view in your PDF reader.
