How to Scan Documents to PDF on iPhone (Built-In, Free)
Published March 24, 2026
Your iPhone has a surprisingly capable document scanner built right in — no third-party apps required. You can scan receipts, contracts, forms, handwritten notes, and anything else directly to a clean PDF. Here's how to use it.
Method 1: Scan Using the Notes App
The Notes app is the easiest way to scan documents on iPhone. It uses automatic edge detection and perspective correction to produce clean, professional-looking scans.
Open the Notes app and create a new note (or open an existing one). Tap the camera icon above the keyboard, then select Scan Documents. Point your camera at the document — the app automatically detects the edges and captures the scan. You can scan multiple pages in one session.
When done, tap Save. To export as PDF, tap the share icon (the box with an arrow) and choose Create PDF. You can then save it to Files, share it, or send it via email.
Method 2: Scan Using the Files App
The Files app also includes document scanning, which saves directly to your chosen folder. Open Files, browse to where you want to save the scan, then tap the three-dot menu (top right). Select Scan Documents.
Scan your pages, then tap Save. The PDF saves directly to your selected Files folder — no extra export step needed.
Tips for Better Scans
Good lighting and a steady hand make a huge difference in scan quality:
- Use natural light — Place the document near a window. Avoid harsh shadows from overhead lighting.
- Flat surface — Place the document on a flat, contrasting surface (dark document on light table works well).
- Hold steady — Wait for the yellow rectangle to turn white before the auto-capture fires. This ensures the image is sharp.
- Manual capture mode — If the auto-detect keeps misreading edges, tap the shutter button manually and drag the corner handles to correct the crop.
Adjusting Scan Quality and Color Mode
After capturing a scan, you can adjust it before saving. Tap the thumbnail of your scan to see editing options. You can choose between:
- Color — Full color, best for photos or colorful documents
- Grayscale — Good general purpose, smaller file size
- Black & White — Highest contrast, ideal for printed text
- Photo — Keeps the image unprocessed
For most text documents, Black & White produces the crispest result and the smallest file size.
Scanning Multi-Page Documents
Both the Notes and Files scanner let you scan multiple pages into a single PDF. After capturing the first page, the camera stays active — just move to the next page and it auto-captures again. Keep going until all pages are scanned, then tap Save.
The pages are automatically combined into one multi-page PDF, which is exactly what you need for contracts, reports, or booklets.
What If the PDF Is Too Large?
Scanned PDFs can get large, especially with multiple pages or color scans. If you need to share the file via email or upload it to a portal with a size limit, PeacefulPDF can compress it significantly without visible quality loss — all in your browser, no app needed.
Third-Party Scanner Apps Worth Knowing
For advanced features like OCR (making scanned text searchable and selectable), you might want to explore apps like Adobe Scan or Microsoft Lens. Both are free and integrate well with cloud storage. However, for everyday scanning to PDF, the built-in iPhone scanner is fast, private, and requires no accounts.
