Redact PDF

Real redaction, not a black rectangle: the covered content is physically removed from the file. And because it runs in your browser, the document you're redacting is never uploaded anywhere.

True PDF Redaction — Free & Private

Most free "redaction" tools only draw a black box on top of the text. The words are still in the file — anyone can select the area and copy-paste them out, and courts, journalists, and regulators have caught exactly this mistake in the wild many times. Adobe Acrobat does real redaction, but behind a subscription.

PeacefulPDF redacts the way security teams recommend: pages containing redactions are re-rendered as flat images with the black boxes burned in, so the hidden text simply does not exist in the output file. Pages without redactions are copied untouched, keeping their selectable text and full quality. Document metadata — author, title, creating software — is cleared at the same time, since it often leaks the very information being redacted.

You can verify the result yourself: open the downloaded PDF, try to select text where a box is, and try searching for the redacted words. There is nothing to find. And unlike the upload-based tools, the unredacted original never leaves your computer — which is the whole point when a document is sensitive enough to redact.

FAQ

How is this different from drawing a black box in an editor?

A drawn box is a layer on top — the text below remains in the file and can be extracted. Here, redacted pages are converted to images with the boxes merged in, so the underlying text is deleted from the file's data.

Do redacted pages lose quality?

Redacted pages are re-rendered at 200 DPI — crisp for reading and printing, though their text is no longer selectable (that's inherent to real image-based redaction). Untouched pages are unchanged.

Can redactions be undone?

Not from the output file — the content is gone. Keep your original safe; redaction only affects the downloaded copy.
